Chabot-Las Positas Community College District to Welcome Two New Trustees

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District (CLPCCD) will welcome two new trustees to its board following the results of the November 5th election. Hector Garcia was elected to represent Area 1, which encompasses parts of Hayward. Catheryn Grier will represent Dublin and Northeast Pleasanton as the Area 5 Trustee. Two incumbents whose seats were up for reelection will be returning to serve another term. Maria Heredia, representing Area 4 (Castro Valley, East San Lorenzo, Sunol, and areas of Pleasanton) was re-elected while in Area 7, Stephen Lanza retains his seat to serve the Livermore, East Dublin, and Southeast San Ramon communities.

Hector Garcia is a long-time Hayward educator with experience ranging from classroom teacher, principal, to administrator positions within the Hayward Unified School District. He has also served in a leadership role for the Hayward Promise Neighborhood, a nationally recognized community schools program that brings a holistic approach to supporting students and families in marginalized communities.

Garcia earned his bachelor’s degree in ethnic studies from UC Davis. He holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and an administrative credential from Cal State East Bay.

Catheryn Grier comes to the board of trustees with 15 years of college instruction experience. Her professional background also includes time spent both in the private and public sector. She previously worked as a federal probation officer and currently, she serves as a workplace investigator with Pacific Gas and Electric. As an active member of the Dublin community, she has served on the Dublin Planning Commission and the Dublin Partners in Education.

Grier earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from UC Irvine. She holds a master’s degree in public administration from California State University, San Bernadino.

“The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District Board of Trustees welcomes Hector Garcia and Catheryn Grier to the governance team,” said Dr. Hal Gin, president of the board of trustees. “Their track record as public servants and their commitment to education will enrich the board’s work in support of students and staff.”

Tim Sbranti (Area 5) and Dr. Luis Reynoso (Area 1) are the outgoing trustees. They have served the board since 2019 and 2020, respectively. CLPCCD will publicly recognize them for their service to the district at the board’s November meeting. The new board members will be sworn into office at the board’s December 17 board meeting. The Alameda County Registrar’s Office must certify the results of the election by December 5.
